Why a Royse City dealer
Why Rockwall homeowners call a dealer from next door
1
Close enough to come back
Our shop is in Royse City, just east on I-30. When a generator shows a warning or a new install needs a follow-up visit, we're minutes away, not across the Metroplex.
2
A certified technician you'll know by name
Chris Salinas, Protek's Generac-certified technician, handles maintenance and repairs. He has already serviced existing generators in Rockwall, including in The Shores.
3
Rockwall permits we've already pulled
We've pulled generator permits with the City of Rockwall. We know what the city asks for and how long it usually takes, so your schedule is realistic from day one.
Permits and timeline
What Rockwall's permit process means for your timeline
Installing the generator doesn't take long. Waiting for the city's permit is usually the longest step, so we plan around it from the first visit.
Built in the 1990s or earlier?
Older electrical equipment is the one thing that adds work
Most Rockwall permits go through without surprises. When there is one, it's usually an older panel or meter base in a home built in the 1990s or before. We check this at the estimate, before the permit is filed, so it doesn't show up as a change halfway through.
1
Estimate and load check
We look at your panel, HVAC, major appliances and gas service, then pick a spot for the generator that meets code and your HOA.
2
HOA approval, if you have one
Many Rockwall HOAs want the generator hidden from the street. We'll help you coordinate the approval. If a fence or screen is needed, your own contractor builds it.
3
City of Rockwall permit
In our experience the city issues generator permits in about 7 to 14 days. For homes inside city limits, this is the longest part of the job.
4
Installation
Concrete pad, generator, transfer switch, electrical and gas connections, done by our licensed crew.
5
Inspection and startup
After the city inspection, we start the generator, test a transfer and show you how it works.

HOAs and placement
Keeping the generator out of sight and your HOA on board
Many Rockwall neighborhoods have an HOA, and the most common rule is that equipment can't be seen from the street. Here's how that usually gets handled, and where we fit in.
Privacy screen or fence
Most HOAs we've worked with accept a privacy fence or screen that hides the generator from the street. Protek doesn't build fences, screens or covers. That's work for your fence contractor, and we'll share the clearances the generator needs so they can plan around it.
Behind the backyard fence
Some HOAs require the generator inside the backyard fence, so no new structure is added. We plan the gas and electrical runs to suit.
We help with the HOA approval
We'll coordinate with you and your HOA: the equipment specs, the planned location and answers to their questions, all before anything is ordered or installed.
Sizing
Sizing a generator for a Rockwall home
Generator size depends on your home, not your zip code. These three things decide it.
2,000–4,000 sq ft
typical Rockwall home
Gas or propane
matched to your home
Load calculation
at every estimate
01
Square footage and HVAC
The Rockwall homes we see run about 2,000 to 4,000 square feet. Air conditioning and other large appliances set the load, and the load sets the generator size.
02
Natural gas or propane
Homes with natural gas service connect to the existing gas line. Homes without it run on a propane tank, which affects placement and fuel planning.
03
What you want backed up
Whole home coverage or essential circuits only. We do a load calculation so the generator isn't undersized or oversized for your home.

When the power goes out
What a Rockwall outage looks like with a standby generator
On May 28, 2024, a severe storm left more than 600,000 Oncor customers across North Texas without power, and Oncor told Rockwall-area customers to prepare for extended outages.
The generator senses the outage and starts on its own, whether you're home or not.
The transfer switch moves your home to generator power in seconds.
When utility power is back, it switches back and shuts down by itself.

Utility power: off. No lights, no AC, no refrigerator, no Wi-Fi, and no way to know how long it will last.
Generator power: on. Lights, AC, refrigerator and Wi-Fi back in about 30 seconds, automatically, while the neighbors wait it out.
Who supplies your power
Oncor or Farmers Electric Cooperative
Rockwall sits in Oncor's service area, and parts of Rockwall County are served by Farmers Electric Cooperative. A standby generator works the same way with either one.

Do I need a permit to install a generator in Rockwall?
Yes, for homes inside Rockwall city limits. We pull the permit with the City of Rockwall and schedule the inspection. In our experience the permit takes about 7 to 14 days to be issued.
How long does a generator install take in Rockwall, start to finish?
Most of the calendar time is waiting on the city permit. Once it's issued, installation and the city inspection follow, and we start up and test the generator with you.
Will my HOA let me install a generator?
Usually, yes. The most common rule is that it can't be seen from the street. Many HOAs accept a privacy screen or fence around the unit, and some require it to sit behind the backyard fence. Protek doesn't install fences or screens, but we'll help you coordinate the approval with your HOA.
My home was built in the 1990s. Will that cause problems?
It can. Older panels and meter bases are the most common surprise we find in Rockwall. We check your equipment at the estimate and tell you up front if anything needs updating.
Natural gas or propane: which is better for my Rockwall home?
If your home already has natural gas service, the generator usually connects to it. If not, propane works well but needs a tank, which affects placement. We'll go over both at the estimate.
Do you service generators you didn't install?
Yes. In Rockwall we've maintained generators that other companies installed, including in The Shores. We work on air-cooled Generac and Briggs & Stratton home standby generators.
