Common questions

Whole-home Generac generator FAQs

Do you offer financing?

Yes. Protek Electric has partnered with the National Energy Improvement Fund (NEIF) to offer flexible financing for your generator installation, with a streamlined application and payment options to fit your budget.

Does my generator installation require a city permit?

Yes. Standby generator installations usually require permits and inspections. As a licensed electrical contractor, Protek Electric handles the permit application with the city where you live. If your home is outside city limits, permits are not required.

How large of a generator do I need?

Generator sizing depends on your home's electrical demand, HVAC systems and appliances, and whether you want whole-home or essential-circuit backup. That's why a load calculation is the first step. We make it a priority during your free in-home consultation.

Can a generator run my AC?

Yes. A properly sized standby generator can power one or more air conditioning systems, depending on your home's load calculation and the generator's capacity.

How quickly does the generator turn on?

With a Generac, power is restored automatically within about 30 seconds of an outage. When utility power returns, the generator shuts itself off and switches your home back to the utility.

How often should a Generac generator be serviced?

Most homeowners should have their generator checked at least once a year, or after heavy use, so it's ready for the next outage. Dealer remote monitoring is included for the first year with your purchase, so we're notified when maintenance is due or an alert comes up.

Do you service generators installed by another dealer?

Yes. Whether we installed your generator or a previous dealer did, Protek Electric can maintain and service it, from routine oil changes to authorized Generac warranty repairs. Learn more about our Generac service and repair.

What fuel does a standby generator use?

Generac home standby generators run on natural gas or liquid propane (LP). During your free in-home consultation, we'll check your fuel supply and make sure it can support the generator you choose.
