Permits
How Royse City's generator permit works
Royse City publishes its own standby generator permit guide. Here's what the city asks for, and how we handle it for you.
1 permit
electrical + plumbing
3 inspections
by the city
7–14 days
typical permit time
What goes in the application
One permit, three documents
Site plan
Shows where the generator will sit, plus your electric meter, main panel and gas meter.
Gas calculations
Sizing for the gas line to the generator, or the city's shortcut for a single added load close to the meter.
Manufacturer's specs
The Generac specification sheet and installation manual for your model.
The permit lists both the electrician and the plumber. Protek handles both sides of the job.*
Inspections
Three city inspections
1
Gas pressure test
All gas piping is pressure-tested and inspected before it's covered.
2
Electrical underground
If any wiring runs underground, it's inspected before the trench is filled.
3
Electrical final
The final inspection happens after everything is complete and before the generator runs.
In our experience, generator permits are issued in about 7 to 14 days. That's usually the longest wait in the whole project.
Good to know
The Royse City propane rule
Royse City doesn't allow propane tanks where natural gas service is available to the lot. If your home doesn't have gas service, a propane tank is allowed but needs its own Fire Marshal permit. We'll tell you which applies at the estimate.
*The plumbing and gas portion of the job is handled by one of Protek's authorized plumbing subcontractors. Requirements summarized from the city's Standby Generator Permit Information Guide.

Utility power: off. No lights, no AC, no refrigerator, no Wi-Fi, and no way to know how long it will last.
Generator power: on. Lights, AC, refrigerator and Wi-Fi back in about 30 seconds, automatically, while the neighbors wait it out.
February 2021
What the 2021 winter storm taught Royse City
When the grid failed in February 2021, ERCOT ordered rolling outages meant to last about 45 minutes. Some Texans went without power for days. Here in Royse City, many of our neighbors were among them.
Starts on its own when the power drops, even if you're away from home.
Keeps heat and AC, the refrigerator, lights and Wi-Fi running, based on how it's sized.
No extension cords, no refueling in the cold and no portable generator running near the garage.
Switches back to utility power and shuts down by itself when the outage ends.

Some Royse City homes are on Oncor and some are on Farmers Electric Cooperative. The install process doesn't change either way. We handle the coordination with your power company so everything is scheduled properly.

Sizing
Sizing a generator for a Royse City home
Most homes we see in Royse City run 1,800 to 3,500 square feet. Size alone doesn't decide the generator, though. We do a load calculation that looks at your AC, appliances and what you want backed up, then check your gas service against the city's rules.

Royse City FAQ
Royse City generator questions
Straight answers about permits, propane and response times in Royse City.
Don't see your question?
Call Chris. You'll talk to the technician who does the work, not a call center.
Do I need a permit for a generator in Royse City?
Yes, for homes inside city limits. Royse City uses one standby generator permit that lists both the electrician and the plumber, and we handle it for you. The plumbing and gas portion is done by one of our authorized plumbing subcontractors. In our experience the permit is issued in about 7 to 14 days.
Can I use propane instead of natural gas in Royse City?
Only if natural gas service isn't available to your lot. The city doesn't allow propane tanks where gas service is available. Where it isn't, a propane tank needs a separate Fire Marshal permit.
What inspections does Royse City require for a generator?
Three: a gas pressure test before the piping is covered, an underground electrical inspection if any wiring runs underground, and a final electrical inspection before the generator is put into service.
How quickly can you get to my house?
We're based in Royse City, so response time is fast. Next-day service is available, and we answer after-hours calls.
Does it matter if I'm on Oncor or Farmers Electric?
No. The install process is the same, and we coordinate with your power company so everything is scheduled properly.
Would a standby generator have helped during the 2021 winter storm?
A properly sized standby generator starts automatically when the grid goes down and keeps your home's essentials running until power returns. That's the situation many Royse City homes faced in February 2021, when outages lasted days instead of minutes.
